Recollections

by Alan Travis

I was born in Cincinnati in 1930, probably at Jewish Hospital. My parents Sophie and Phil, my older brother Bob, and possibly my cousin Paul, lived with me in a house on Price Hill, where we lived until I was 5. Bob was six years older than me. Paul Travis, who was my uncle Morris’ son, came to live with us when his mother died of tuberculosis, and stayed with us until his father remarried, when I was about 3 or 4. Paul was a couple of years younger than Bob.

I also had a younger sister named Helen, who died at around age 2. She was four or five years younger than me. My only recollection of her was seeing her learning to walk by walking between my aunt and my mother. I know that there was an autopsy after her death, but my parents never really talked about her.

Morris’ first wife is buried next to my sister in the same cemetery as my parents.
